Hard tap water leaves baked-on mineral spots
San Diego tap water runs 280–350 ppm dissolved minerals. Spray it on a 130°F panel and within minutes you have permanent white spots that block sunlight and require professional pure-water cleaning to remove. A single DIY rinse can lock in soiling for the season.
Pressure washers crack panel seals
Solar panels are sealed against weather, not against direct high-pressure water. Pressure washers force water past the EVA backing seal, leading to slow moisture intrusion, hot spots, and panel failure. This damage is explicitly excluded from every manufacturer warranty we've read.
Soaps void manufacturer warranties
Dish soap, car wash soap, and household degreasers all leave residues that attract more dirt and chemically attack the anti-reflective coating on the panel glass. Most major panel manufacturers (LG, Panasonic, REC, SunPower) explicitly call out soap as a warranty-voiding cleaning method.
Falling off the roof is the actual worst-case
